What is Umbral?
Umbral is a daily breathing and grounding practice app for people who experience sleep paralysis. It includes guided sessions with binaural audio, a voice journal for recording experiences without typing at 3am, SP episode tracking, and streak tracking to build the daily habit.
Do I need headphones?
Stereo headphones are recommended. The sessions use binaural audio, which sends slightly different frequencies to each ear. This requires left/right channel separation, so any standard stereo headphones or earbuds will work. Speakers will not produce the binaural effect. Keep volume at a comfortable, moderate level. If you have epilepsy or a seizure disorder, consult your doctor before using binaural audio.
What devices are supported?
Umbral is available for iPhone running iOS 17 or later. This includes iPhone XS and newer models. The app is not currently available on iPad, Mac, or Android.
Is my data private?
Yes. All of your practice data, journal entries, and voice recordings are stored on your iPhone. If you have iCloud enabled, your data syncs to your personal iCloud account for access across your devices. This sync is between you and Apple. Umbral has no server, no user accounts, and no access to your data. For full details, see the privacy policy.
How do I delete my data?
Delete the Umbral app from your iPhone to remove all local data. If you use iCloud sync, your data may also be stored in your iCloud account — you can remove it through Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > Manage Storage.
If you subscribed to the email list on the website, you can unsubscribe using the link in any email, or contact hello@getumbral.app to be removed.
